This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to lower blood levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It may also be administered as an adjunct or alternative therapy to lipid-lowering treatments in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication should be used in conjunction with dietary modifications to reduce cardiovascular disease risk, and it's important to identify and treat any secondary causes beforehand. Lipid levels should be checked periodically to evaluate treatment efficacy, particularly special testing for triglycerides over 400 mg/dL. In patients with acute coronary events, lipid tests should be performed upon admission or within 24 hours post-admission to inform treatment planning. In summary, this medication is used to manage blood lipid levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
