This medication is used as an adjunct to diet to lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol, and to raise HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It can be used particularly when other lipid-lowering therapies are not effective in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication has only been studied in some types of dyslipidemia, and other causes must be differentiated and treated if necessary before treatment. It should be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet, and regular monitoring of the patient's lipid levels is important. This medication helps to manage the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease associated with hypercholesterolemia.
