Reduction of cholesterol and improvement of lipids in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia through increased HDL.
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary therapy to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly in familial and non-familial cases, while increasing good cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol. Additionally, it may be used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia where other lipid-lowering therapies are ineffective or as an adjunctive treatment. This medication is applicable to individuals at increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases due to dyslipidemia and should be effectively used alongside a dietary regimen that includes limitations on saturated fats and cholesterol. Prior to treatment, it is important to identify and manage other causes such as diabetes or hypothyroidism. Monitoring of treatment progress through specific lipid level measurements is essential, and treatment should be initiated at an appropriate time. This medication helps improve dyslipidemia.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. The dosage should be adjusted based on the patient's baseline LDL-cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response. The dosage range for primary hypercholesterolemia is 10/10mg to 10/80mg per day, with an initial dose of either 10/10mg or 10/20mg per day recommended. For patients requiring a significant reduction in LDL-cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40mg per day is suggested. After starting the medication or adjusting the dosage, lipid levels should be monitored after an interval of at least two weeks and dosages should be adjusted accordingly.
This medication may affect muscles, and if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, you must notify your doctor immediately. In particular, patients with severe infections, hypotension, major surgery or trauma, metabolic and electrolyte abnormalities, or uncontrolled seizures may need to temporarily stop or discontinue the medication. This medication should not be used in patients with allergies to its components, active liver disease, or persistent unexplained elevations in liver enzyme levels, or those with muscular diseases. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication. Additionally, it is not administered to patients who are on certain antiviral medications or have genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of alcohol dependence, liver disease, severe liver dysfunction, poor kidney function, hypothyroidism, and in the elderly. Regular liver function tests should be conducted before and during treatment due to the potential impact of this medication on liver function. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, or fever occur, you should visit a hospital promptly for blood testing, and discontinue the drug if necessary. This medication can interact with various other drugs, so it is essential to inform your doctor of any medications currently being taken, particularly with specific antibiotics, antivirals, immunosuppressants, and fibrate medications. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, hence it is not recommended in pediatric populations. There is no specific antidote for overdose, thus management should be based on symptoms along with liver function and muscle enzyme tests.
