Improvement of cholesterol and lipid levels in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication helps reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol, and increase HDL cholesterol when used alongside dietary modifications in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly in heterozygous familial and non-familial cases. Additionally, it is used as an adjunctive therapy or when alternative treatments are ineffective in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This drug contributes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and it is important to administer it alongside appropriate dietary modifications. Prior to treatment, secondary causes of dyslipidemia, such as diabetes and hypothyroidism, should be confirmed and treated. Regular monitoring of blood lipid levels is necessary to track treatment progress. Overall, this medication is used in the management of hypercholesterolemia and improving associated cardiovascular risks.
This medication is administered once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day, with an initial dose recommended at 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg per day. Patients requiring more significant reductions (55% or more) in LDL cholesterol should start at an initial dose of 10/40 mg per day. Dose adjustments should be made after checking blood lipid levels at intervals of more than 2 weeks.
This drug may cause serious muscle problems, so if sudden muscle pain or weakness occurs, consult a physician immediately. Especially in cases of severe infection, hypotension, major surgery or trauma, and uncontrolled seizures, this medication should be temporarily discontinued or stopped. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or active liver disease should not take it. Women with muscle diseases or who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication. Additionally, concurrent use with certain antiviral drugs is prohibited. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse, liver function issues, elderly individuals, those with renal impairment, or hypothyroidism who have a high risk of myopathy should use this drug cautiously. Care should also be taken when co-administering fibrate-class medications. While taking this drug, liver function tests and muscle-related tests should be performed regularly, and any abnormal liver or muscle symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Because this medication can affect liver function, if symptoms of liver damage occur, such as nausea, vomiting, or fatigue, the medication should be discontinued and medical advice sought. Rarely, skin rashes, allergic reactions, or severe skin conditions may occur, so if such symptoms arise, promptly inform healthcare professionals. This drug may pose risks to the fetus during pregnancy, so women planning to become pregnant must consult a physician and use appropriate contraception while taking the medication. Nursing women should also avoid taking this drug. Elderly patients or those with decreased renal function require careful monitoring and possible dosage adjustment. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and symptomatic treatment and supportive care are necessary. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so this drug is not recommended for use in pediatric patients. Lastly, caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery as dizziness may occur during treatment.
