Reduction of cholesterol in hypercholesterolemia (primary, familial) and dyslipidemia, and suppression of cardiovascular disease risk through HDL increase
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet to lower high cholesterol and various lipid levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia while increasing good cholesterol (HDL). It is also used in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia either in combination with other lipid-lowering treatments or as an alternative when other treatments are ineffective. This medication helps regulate lipid levels in patients at high risk for vascular disease and is recommended when dietary and non-pharmacological treatments are insufficient. It is also important to identify and manage secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism before starting treatment. During the treatment process, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels should be systematically checked, and appropriate adjustments should be made according to the patient’s health status. This medication is used effectively to improve such dyslipidemias.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is from 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day. An initial dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg per day is recommended. For patients requiring more significant reduction in LDL cholesterol (more than 55%), an initial dose of 10/40 mg per day is recommended. After administration or adjustment of dosage, liver function tests should be performed after at least 2 weeks.
This medication is used to lower blood cholesterol levels. Symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness may occur while taking this medication, and if these symptoms are severe or accompanied by fever or malaise, immediate consultation with a physician is required. Serious muscle-related problems can also affect kidney function, so caution is necessary. Therefore, during acute infections, hypotension, after major surgeries, trauma, or severe metabolic disorders, this medication may be temporarily suspended. Individuals with impaired liver function or liver disease should not take this medication and regular liver function tests should be conducted before and during treatment. If this medication is taken in conjunction with certain drugs, the risk of muscle-related side effects may increase, so if other medications are being taken, consultation with a physician or pharmacist is mandatory. Pregnant women or women who could become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age must use appropriate contraception while on this medication. Additionally, this medication has not been established as safe and effective for children, thus it is not recommended. Elderly individuals are at higher risk for myopathy, so caution is required during use, but no special dose adjustments are necessary. In the case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, so treatment should be symptomatic, monitoring liver function and muscle condition. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and transferring to other containers should be avoided. Caution is required when driving or operating machinery as dizziness may occur.
