View approved original text

This medication is used alongside diet and exercise to aid blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone, and in cases where there has been no prior experience with diabetes medication or if blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it can be used in combination with metformin. Additionally, it can be added when blood sugar control is insufficient with monotherapy using sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. When blood sugar control is challenging even with multiple medications, this medication can be used to improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious allergic reactions in some patients. If symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional. There is a risk of pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, while taking this medication. Therefore, symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite should be closely monitored, and a doctor should be consulted. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not take this medication. Patients who have allergies to this medication or any of its components should also avoid it. Patients with impaired kidney function may experience delayed excretion of this medication, thus the dosage should be adjusted or taken according to a physician's instructions. This medication may cause hypoglycemic symptoms when used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications, so blood glucose levels should be checked periodically, and attention should be paid to hypoglycemic symptoms. While taking this medication, side effects such as upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, headache, diarrhea, and nausea may occur, and if symptoms are severe, medical consultation is advised. Particularly when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, which can cause hypoglycemia, there is a heightened risk of low blood sugar requiring potential dosage adjustments. If joint pain or blisters on the skin develop while taking this medication, notify a physician immediately for appropriate treatment. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid this medication as its safety has not been established. Elderly patients may experience diminished kidney function; regular kidney function tests before and after taking this medication are recommended. In the case of overdose, general emergency measures should be enacted, and if necessary, blood dialysis can remove this medication, so immediate medical attention is required. This medication has a low potential for drug interactions; however, patients should inform healthcare providers of any specific medications they are taking.
