Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to enhance effectiveness. This contributes to smoother blood sugar management and aids in the treatment of diabetes.
For monotherapy or combination therapy, the recommended dose of this medication is 20 mg once daily. It can be taken regardless of meals. When administered in combination with sulfonylureas, a reduction in sulfonylurea dosage may be considered to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment. No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment.
This medication should not be used in patients with allergy reactions to the active ingredient or other components. It is not suitable for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic coma, or those with type 1 diabetes, and should not be administered if insulin treatment is necessary to control blood sugar. For patients with severe infections, pre- and post-surgery, or with severe trauma, blood sugar must be managed with insulin injections, making the use of this medication inappropriate. For patients with severe hepatic dysfunction, clinical experience is lacking and it should be used cautiously. For patients with mild to moderate heart failure, this medication should be used carefully, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. Patients taking sulfonylureas or insulin may be at risk for hypoglycemia and should take caution. In states with high hypoglycemia risk, such as pituitary dysfunction, adrenal insufficiency, malnutrition, irregular meals, excessive exercise, and excessive alcohol, it should be administered with care. Patients with a history of abdominal surgery or intestinal obstruction also need caution. It is advisable to avoid use in patients with cardiac arrhythmias or risk of QT interval prolongation. Acute pancreatitis symptoms may occur; if abdominal pain or vomiting persists, seek medical attention immediately. During treatment, hypoglycemic symptoms may appear, and appropriate measures should be taken when symptoms occur, such as consuming foods containing sugar. When used in combination with other diabetes medications with a high risk of hypoglycemia, extra caution is necessary, and dose adjustments may be required if needed. This medication may cause adverse reactions such as hepatic dysfunction, interstitial pneumonia, skin rashes, and blistering diseases, so consult healthcare professionals immediately if symptoms occur. The use of this medication is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and breastfeeding women should consult a physician before deciding. In pediatric patients, safety and efficacy have not been confirmed, so it is advisable not to use it. Elderly patients may have decreased physical function, so their condition should be closely monitored during use. In case of overdose, measures such as removing the drug from the gastrointestinal tract and appropriate monitoring like ECG tests may be required, along with possible additional treatment based on the patient's condition. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and avoid transferring it to other containers. This medication may exacerbate joint pain during treatment, so consult a physician if symptoms occur, and report immediately and receive treatment if blistering skin diseases occur. When used with other drugs with blood sugar-lowering effects, blood sugar changes and patient status should be carefully monitored, and caution is also necessary when used with medications that may cause blood sugar elevation. When taken with antiarrhythmic drugs, caution is advised due to the risk of QT interval prolongation.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air from entering, preferably in a cool room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way helps maintain the medication's effectiveness and prevents deterioration.
