This medication is used to treat moderate to severe symptoms of Alzheimer's-type dementia.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken once daily just before bedtime and can be taken regardless of food. The initial recommended dose of donepezil hydrochloride is 5 mg once a day. It should be taken at 5 mg for 4 to 6 weeks, and upon evaluation of clinical response, it can be increased to 10 mg. Care should be taken during the increase to 10 mg per day regarding gastrointestinal adverse reactions. Maintain a dosage of 10 mg once daily for a minimum of 3 months.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by anyone allergic to certain ingredients, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or patients with a genetic inability to properly digest lactose. Individuals with heart disease or arrhythmia should be cautious as they may experience bradycardia or arrhythmias while using this medication. Patients with a history of peptic ulcers or those taking NSAIDs should be careful as there is a risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or worsening of ulcers. Patients with asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease should be cautious as this medication may induce bronchoconstriction and worsen their symptoms. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease should be careful as this medication can exacerbate their symptoms. Serious side effects may occur such as heart problems, gastrointestinal bleeding, abnormal liver function, seizures, movement disorders, muscle abnormalities, difficulty in breathing, acute pancreatitis, and acute renal failure; if any abnormal symptoms appear, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dizziness, insomnia, headache, and fatigue; however, most are mild and temporary. This medication is approved solely for use in patients with Alzheimer's-type dementia and should not be used for other types of dementia or memory disorders. Regular assessments of the patient's condition should be conducted after treatment initiation, and if there is no effect or severe side effects, discontinuation of treatment should be considered. This medication may slow down heart rate or cause arrhythmia, thus patients with heart disease may need an electrocardiogram. Caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery as dizziness, fatigue, or muscle cramps may occur. This medication may interact with certain other drugs, so if taking other medications, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid this medication unless absolutely necessary and should consult a professional before use. Safety in pediatric patients has not been established, hence it is not recommended for use in children. In case of overdose, serious symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, severe muscle weakness, and difficulty in breathing may appear; emergency treatment should be sought immediately, and atropine may be used as an antidote.
