This medication helps control cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly familial and non-familial types, as well as mixed dyslipidemia. It lowers levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol while increasing HDL-cholesterol. The drug is used in conjunction with an appropriate diet and is administered as an adjunctive treatment when diet alone is insufficient. It is also important to check and manage secondary causes of dyslipidemia such as diabetes and hypothyroidism. This drug is used to improve cardiovascular health by controlling cholesterol levels in patients at high risk for atherosclerotic vascular disease.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

This medication is taken once daily regardless of meals. The recommended starting dose is 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg daily. The dosing range is 10/10 mg to 10/40 mg daily. If a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol is needed, the dose can be adjusted. After initiating treatment or after dose adjustment, check blood lipid levels at intervals of more than 2 weeks before readjusting the dose.

Precautions

This drug carries the risk of severe muscle problems. Patients with acute infections, hypotension, following major surgery, trauma, severe metabolic disturbances, or seizures should temporarily halt or discontinue this treatment. Those with allergies to the main ingredient or components of this drug, liver disease or unexplained persistent elevation of liver enzymes, muscle disorders, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, lactating women, those taking certain antiviral drugs, and those with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Individuals with a history of alcohol dependence or liver disease, severe liver dysfunction, impaired kidney function or hypothyroidism, family history of muscle disorders, previous muscle issues with statin medications, elderly patients over 70, and those taking certain medications should use this drug with caution. If symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, fatigue, and muscle pain accompanied by fever occur during treatment, contact a physician immediately and, if necessary, confirm muscle damage through blood tests. If there is significant muscle damage, discontinue the medication. As liver function abnormalities may occur, liver function tests should be conducted before starting this medication, and repeated tests should be performed if any abnormal symptoms appear during treatment. If liver function levels rise significantly, dosing should be halted or reduced. This drug may increase blood glucose levels, but the cardiovascular disease prevention benefits outweigh this risk, so individuals requiring blood glucose management should regularly monitor their blood glucose levels while taking this drug. This medication is not administered to pregnant or lactating women, and fertile women should use appropriate contraceptive methods. Safety for children or adolescents has not been established, so its use is not recommended. Elderly patients are also at risk for muscle problems, requiring caution; however, dosage adjustments are generally not necessary. This medication can interact with multiple drugs, so it is essential to inform your physician or pharmacist if you are taking other medications, especially those that may affect liver function or cause muscle damage. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, thus treatment should be symptom-specific along with supportive care, and monitoring for liver function and muscle damage is required. This drug must be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container is not advisable as it may compromise quality.
