This medication is used to lower blood levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial and non-familial) and mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing beneficial HDL-cholesterol levels. It is primarily used in conjunction with diet and is administered as an adjunct when dietary control alone is insufficient for lipid management. This medication is particularly applicable to patients at increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia, prescribed considering multiple risk factors. It is also important to identify and treat underlying causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism, and a precise diagnosis including lipid tests prior to administration is necessary. Since the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality reduction effects of this medication compared to atorvastatin have not been established, it should be used after consultation with healthcare providers. Overall, this medication helps lower cardiovascular risk through the treatment of dyslipidemia or hypercholesterolemia.

Precautions

This medication has been reported to cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious muscle issues. It is particularly necessary to discontinue this medication temporarily or permanently in patients showing severe myopathy symptoms or at risk for acute renal failure. Patients allergic to this medication or its components, those with very severe liver dysfunction or active liver disease, patients with muscle diseases, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, breastfeeding women, and patients taking certain antiviral medications should not take this medication. Alcoholics or patients with a history of liver disease, those with reduced kidney function, hypothyroidism, or a history of genetic muscle disorders should use this medication with caution, as should elderly patients. Patients taking fibrate-class medications and those with severe muscle weakness should also be cautious. Symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, fatigue, fever, etc. should be reported to a doctor immediately during the course of this medication, and blood tests should be performed to check for muscle damage. Liver function abnormalities may occur, so it's important to conduct liver function tests before starting treatment and during treatment. This medication should not be administered to pregnant or breastfeeding women, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception. Furthermore, due to numerous drug interactions, it is essential to inform the physician or pharmacist about current medications being taken, especially when taken with certain antibiotics, antivirals, immunosuppressants, or fibrate-class medications. This medication's safety in children has not been established, and elderly patients have a higher risk of myopathy, thus caution is necessary during use. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and it is advisable not to transfer it to other containers.
