This drug helps lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing good cholesterol (HDL) levels. It is especially effective as an adjunct to dietary therapy and can also help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Before treatment, it is important to confirm that dyslipidemia is not due to underlying diseases or medications, and regular blood tests to monitor lipid levels are essential during treatment. This drug should be used alongside dietary adjustments that limit saturated fat and cholesterol intake, and is intended for use when non-drug therapies are insufficient. Furthermore, it can be initiated promptly after an acute coronary event to enhance therapeutic effects. This drug is used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia.

Precautions

This drug may cause a rare side effect known as rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious muscle problems. Due to the risk of sudden deterioration in kidney function, patients should inform their doctor immediately if they experience severe muscle pain or weakness. This drug should not be used in patients with certain diseases or those taking specific medications. For example, it is contraindicated in women who are pregnant or have liver disease, patients with certain genetic lactose degrading disorders, and those taking specific antivirals. Patients with alcohol dependence, poor liver function, a history of muscle disorders, or past muscle-related side effects should be particularly cautious when using this drug and require regular monitoring. During treatment with this drug, regular liver function tests and monitoring of muscle status should be conducted, and if liver function worsens or muscle pain intensifies, discontinuation may be necessary. Additionally, this drug can interact with several other medications, so it is crucial to inform healthcare providers of any other drugs being taken. Care should be taken particularly when co-administering specific antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and fibrates. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this drug and should consult healthcare professionals immediately if they are taking it. Nursing mothers are also advised against using this drug. This drug is not recommended for children, and older adults may be more susceptible to muscle-related side effects, so caution is advised. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so symptomatic treatment and supportive care will be provided, with close monitoring of liver and muscle function. This drug should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container for safety.
