This medication is used as an adjunct to diet for lowering elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly in patients with heterozygous familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, and for raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is especially used in conjunction with an appropriate diet in patients for whom hypercholesterolemia increases the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and is of help when dietary modification and non-pharmacological treatment are insufficiently effective. Before using this medication, alternative causes of dyslipidemia should be identified and treated if necessary, and lipid tests, including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, should be performed during treatment. This drug has not been shown to be superior to atorvastatin in direct comparisons, and it has not been studied in some types of dyslipidemia. It is used to assist patients in safe and effective lipid management and improve vascular health.
