Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone as an initial treatment, and for patients who have not previously taken antidiabetic medications and find blood glucose control challenging with monotherapy, it can be combined with metformin. Additionally, if blood glucose control is insufficient with monotherapy using sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, this medication can be taken together to enhance therapeutic effect. Furthermore, if adequate blood glucose control is not achieved even with multiple medications, this medication can be used additionally. Thus, this medication effectively aids in blood glucose management across various treatment stages, improving blood glucose control.

For monotherapy or combination therapy, the usual dosage is 100 mg once daily, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. Precautions

This medication may rarely cause severe allergic reactions; thus, if symptoms such as skin rash or difficulty breathing occur, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. Pancreatitis may occur during medication use, so if symptoms such as sudden abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea appear, visit a hospital immediately. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not use this medication, nor should those with allergies to this medication or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function need to adjust the dosage, therefore regular kidney function tests and adherence to doctor's instructions are necessary. During medication use, symptoms similar to a cold, headaches, dyspepsia, diarrhea, etc., may occur, and symptoms of hypoglycemia may also appear, making it important to monitor blood glucose frequently. Especially when taken together with other hypoglycemic agents like insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia is increased, so dosage adjustments should be discussed with a doctor if these medications are in use. If severe joint pain or skin blistering appears, inform a doctor immediately, and if necessary, discontinue medication. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended, so consult with a doctor before taking. Elderly patients may experience reduced kidney function; thus, kidney function should be periodically checked before and during medication use, and dosage adjustments may be needed. In the case of overdose, visit a hospital immediately for appropriate treatment since this medication can be partially removed by hemodialysis, which may be helpful if necessary. Co-administration with other medications has a low potential for drug interactions; however, caution is needed when taken with cyclosporine or digoxin due to possible changes in blood concentration.
