Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood glucose control for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used along with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone and may be helpful as monotherapy in patients who are not on diabetes medication. However, if monotherapy is not sufficiently effective, it can be combined with metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, and insulin to improve blood glucose control. Even in cases where blood glucose control remains difficult when combining with various drugs, adding this medication can enhance its effect. Thus, this drug is used in conjunction with multiple therapeutic approaches to improve blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Precautions

This medication may rarely cause severe allergic reactions; therefore, if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur after administration, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional. This medication can trigger acute pancreatitis, which is a serious inflammation of the pancreas. If symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting occur, inform a physician immediately. This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or those with diabetic ketoacidosis, nor in individuals who are hypersensitive to this drug or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function may slow the excretion of this drug, so dosage adjustment or careful administration is necessary, along with regular monitoring of kidney function. Hypoglycemia may occur when using this drug alone or in combination with other diabetes medications, so be vigilant for symptoms of hypoglycemia and adjust the dosage of other medications as needed. Headache, upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, diarrhea, nausea, and other symptoms may occur during treatment; if symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a physician. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy, and nursing mothers should also avoid taking it. It is advisable not to use in children or adolescents under 18 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients may have an increased risk of impaired kidney function, and careful evaluation of kidney function should be performed regularly before and after starting treatment, adjusting the dosage as necessary. In cases of overdose, standard emergency procedures such as gastrointestinal decontamination should be carried out, and if necessary, some of the drug may be removed by hemodialysis. This drug has relatively few interactions when used with specific medications; however, caution is advised when used concurrently with other hypoglycemic agents or specific medications, as the risk of hypoglycemia may increase. If severe joint pain or blistering skin disease occurs during treatment, consult a physician immediately to decide whether to discontinue the medication.
