Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in combination with dietary and exercise therapy to assist patients with type 2 diabetes in controlling blood sugar levels. Initially, it is given as monotherapy, and in cases where blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy or where the patient has not previously used diabetes medications, it may be taken together with Metformin. Additionally, this medication is used in combination with sulfonylureas, Metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin when blood glucose control is insufficient with monotherapy. If combination therapy is not sufficiently effective, this medication may be added to improve blood glucose control. It effectively assists in controlling blood glucose levels in combination with multiple medications.

Precautions

This medication may cause allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. While taking this medication, there is a risk of developing acute pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas, so it is crucial to inform healthcare professionals immediately if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite appear. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not take this medication, nor should those who are allergic to this medication or its components. Patients with impaired renal function need to adjust the dosage of this medication, so regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and the advice of a doctor should be followed. Some patients reported symptoms such as cold symptoms, headaches, and digestive disorders when taking this medication alone or in combination with other diabetes medications. If these symptoms are severe, consult healthcare professionals. When taken with other hypoglycemic agents, especially insulin or sulfonylureas, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so glucose levels should be checked frequently, and immediate action should be taken if symptoms occur. If any abnormal symptoms such as severe joint pain or skin blisters occur while taking this medication, discontinue use immediately and seek consultation from a specialist. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid using this medication, and children under 18 years of age should not take it as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients are at a higher risk of impaired renal function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are necessary. In case of overdose, general treatment such as removing the drug from the gastrointestinal tract should be performed, and if necessary, some drugs may be removed by hemodialysis. Therefore, it is essential to visit a medical facility immediately in emergency situations. This drug has relatively few interactions with other medications, but if the patient is taking certain drugs, they should inform their doctor or pharmacist.
