How to take

Adult dose

Adults: Take 1 tablet of this medication orally once a week. Since food interferes with the absorption of this drug, take it at least 30 minutes before breakfast or at least 2 hours apart from food or beverages at any time during the day. When taking, remain in an upright position and take with a sufficient amount of plain water (170–230 mL), and do not chew or suck on the tablet to prevent oral pharynx ulceration.

Precautions

This medication is an oral bisphosphonate and may irritate the mucosa of the stomach and esophagus, potentially causing gastrointestinal issues such as esophagitis or esophageal ulcers. Take with a sufficient amount of water and avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking. If you experience difficulty swallowing, pain behind the sternum, or heartburn, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. Patients with esophageal stricture or severe renal impairment, as well as those with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake is essential while taking this medication, especially during long-term steroid therapy. Bisphosphonate drugs can rarely cause serious side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw, so consult a doctor if dental treatment is required. This medication should preferably not be given to pregnant or breastfeeding women, and safety in children has not been established. Overdose may lead to hypocalcemia, requiring calcium supplementation and potentially gastric lavage. During treatment, avoid taking other medications or foods containing di- or trivalent cations, as they may interfere with drug absorption. Older adults can take this medication similarly to regular adults, but they should be well informed about the dosing method and consult a doctor immediately if any abnormal symptoms occur. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container for safety.
