Treatment of insomnia
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
The lowest effective dose of this medicine should be used. The recommended daily dose for adults is 1mg. The dose may be increased to 2-3mg if clinically necessary. Because this medicine may impair driving or other activities requiring full alertness on the day after taking it, take it once immediately before bedtime, allowing at least 7-8 hours between taking the medicine and waking. Do not exceed the recommended dose of 3mg; take it once immediately before bedtime. For elderly or debilitated patients, do not exceed 2mg per day. For patients with severe hepatic impairment or those taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, do not exceed 2mg per day (see Interactions). For patients taking central nervous system depressants, dose adjustment may be necessary because of the possibility of additive effects. Taking this medicine with a high-fat/high-calorie meal or immediately after a meal is expected to slow its absorption and reduce its effect on sleep latency.

Precautions

Particularly, taking high doses or combining it with other CNS depressants or alcohol can enhance the depressant effect, so care should be taken. This medication should be taken just before bedtime, and taking it while awake may result in side effects such as memory loss, hallucinations, and dizziness. Elderly or weak patients may be more sensitive to this medication, so lower doses should be used, and they should be monitored carefully. If sleep disturbances persist, evaluation by a physician is needed as there may be other physical or mental disorders. If swelling occurs in the tongue, throat, or larynx, or if shortness of breath, nausea, or vomiting occurs while taking this medication, usage should be stopped immediately and emergency care should be sought. Complex sleep behaviors, such as driving or eating while asleep, may occur; if these symptoms appear, the medication should be discontinued. This medication carries a risk of abuse and dependence; therefore, it should be used cautiously, especially in individuals with a history of substance abuse. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their physician regarding potential effects on the fetus or infant, as the risks are not clearly established. It should not be used in patients under 18 years as safety and efficacy have not been established in this population. Patients with impaired liver or kidney function, respiratory diseases, or depression should be particularly cautious when taking this medication. Alcohol or other CNS depressants should not be combined with this medication, and interactions with certain medications may occur, hence it should be reported to a physician. In case of overdose, severe impairment of consciousness or respiratory depression may occur, thus it is crucial to adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage; in case of overdose, medical attention should be sought immediately.
