Treatment of insomnia
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Use the lowest effective dose of this medicine. The recommended daily dose for adults is 1mg. If clinically necessary, the dose may be increased to 2-3mg. Because taking this medicine may impair driving or other activities that require full alertness the following day, take it once immediately before bedtime, allowing at least 7-8 hours between taking the medicine and waking up. Do not exceed the recommended dose of 3mg; take once immediately before bedtime. For elderly or debilitated patients, do not exceed 2mg daily. For patients with severe hepatic impairment or those taking potent CYP3A4 inhibitors, do not exceed 2mg daily (see Interactions). For patients taking central nervous system depressants, dose adjustment may be necessary because of the potential for additive effects. Taking this medicine with a high-fat/high-calorie meal or immediately after a meal is expected to slow its absorption and reduce its effect on sleep latency.

How to take

Precautions

This drug acts as a central nervous system depressant and may cause drowsiness or impairment in actions the next day, thus caution is needed when engaging in hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery. Additionally, concurrent use with other central nervous system depressants or alcohol may enhance the depressant effects, necessitating dose adjustments. This medication should be taken right before bedtime, and if taken while awake, side effects such as memory loss, hallucinations, and dizziness may occur. In elderly or frail patients, the risk of falls is higher due to drowsiness and decreased consciousness, so the minimum dose should be used and careful monitoring is necessary. If sleep disturbances persist for more than 7-10 days, evaluation by a specialist is needed as there may be other physical or mental health conditions. Rarely, during initial use or continued use, anaphylactic reactions may occur, such as swelling of the tongue, throat, larynx, or difficulty breathing, so if any unusual symptoms appear, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a healthcare professional. Complex sleep behaviors, for example, driving or eating while asleep, may occur, and these behaviors can lead to serious injury to oneself or others, so the drug should be stopped immediately if experienced. There is a risk of abuse and dependence with this medication, so patients with a history of substance abuse or psychiatric disorders should use it with caution. Patients with impaired liver or kidney function, elderly patients, and those with depression require special attention when using this medication, including dose adjustments or close monitoring by healthcare professionals. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding must consult a physician before using this medication, and patients under 18 years of age should not use it as safety has not been established. Overdosage can lead to decreased consciousness and respiratory suppression, which requires immediate treatment, so caution is advised. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, kept in its original container, and not transferred to other containers to prevent accidents or degradation of quality.
