Improvement of Selenium Deficiency
This medication is used to provide selenium for patients with selenium deficiency that cannot be supplemented through nutrition alone. It helps improve various symptoms caused by selenium deficiency.
Inject 100μg of selenium daily via intramuscular or intravenous injection. If necessary, the dose may be increased to 200μg per day. If this medication is added to the basic intravenous total parenteral nutrition (TPN), the daily dose should be 100μg of selenium.
This medication contains selenium and should not be used in patients with selenium toxicity. Patients who are allergic to this drug or any of its components should not be administered this drug. Rarely, pain or allergic reactions may occur when injecting this drug, so caution is required. If symptoms such as dermatitis, foul odor when sweating or breathing, hair loss, anxiety, vomiting, etc. appear, the administration should be stopped immediately. Care should be taken to prevent the formation of precipitate when mixing with other intravenous infusion solutions, and if the acidity (pH) of the solution is too low or if mixed with reducing agents like Vitamin C, selenium may precipitate and not be absorbed in the body. If precipitate or color changes appear during mixing, use should be discontinued and verification should be made for safety. This medication contains sodium, so patients who require a low-sodium diet should consider this. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully assess the benefits and risks of using this medication, as animal studies have reported a possibility of fetal malformation. If nursing mothers use this medication, it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding or to stop the drug, as the drug may be transmitted to the baby through breast milk. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as a garlic odor from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may appear, and prolonged overdose may affect the growth of fingernails and hair and cause peripheral nerve damage. In the event of an overdose, actions such as gastric lavage, promotion of urinary excretion, and high-dose vitamin C administration may be necessary, and in severe cases, dialysis may be required to remove selenium. At this time, the specific antidote dimercaprol should not be used as it may worsen selenium toxicity. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in a cool, dry place away from light.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to avoid contact with air and should be kept in a cool, dry place, avoiding direct sunlight, at a temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
