Improvement of bleeding tendency caused by systemic and local fibrinolysis
This medication is used for various abnormal bleeding symptoms associated with systemic or local fibrinolysis. For example, it helps treat the bleeding tendency observed in leukemia, aplastic anemia, purpura, and cancer, as well as abnormal bleeding that occurs during or after surgery. It is also indicated for abnormal bleeding due to pulmonary hemorrhage, genital bleeding, renal bleeding, and during or after prostate surgery. This medication is useful in improving these bleeding symptoms.
As tranexamic acid, the usual adult dosage is 750 to 2000mg per day divided into 3 to 4 oral doses. The dosage may be adjusted according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be used in patients receiving thrombin. Patients with severe renal failure should not be administered this medication due to the risk of accumulation in the body. Patients who are allergic to this drug or its components should not take it. This drug should also not be given to patients with active thromboembolism. Patients with thrombosis or at risk of thrombosis should use this medication with caution. Patients with consumptive coagulopathy should also be cautious when using this drug. Patients who are bedridden after surgery or receiving compression hemostasis treatment should be careful due to the increased risk of thrombosis. Renal failure patients should be monitored as this medication may accumulate in the body. This medication contains a dye known as Yellow No. 5, so caution should be exercised when administering it to individuals allergic to this component. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions such as shock, itching, rash, and flushing may occur, and if any unusual symptoms appear, treatment should be stopped immediately. Temporary disturbances in color perception may occur, and the use of the drug should be discontinued if these symptoms arise. Upper urinary tract bleeding may occur, so hemophiliac patients should take particular care. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and epigastric pain may appear. Serious side effects such as drowsiness, headache, and thrombosis have also been reported occasionally. Patients with hereditary angioedema should undergo regular eye examinations and liver function tests while taking this drug long-term. Patients with abnormal menstrual bleeding should avoid using this drug until the cause of the bleeding is identified, and if bleeding does not reduce, alternative treatments should be considered. The risk of thrombosis may increase if this drug is used in conjunction with other medications that promote thrombus formation, so they should not be combined. When used with hemostatic agents or coagulation factor preparations, caution is needed due to the risk of thromboembolism. Women taking hormonal contraceptives may have an elevated risk of thrombosis, so it is advisable to use non-hormonal alternative contraception. During pregnancy, caution is recommended as it can cross the placenta, and although a small amount may pass into breast milk during lactation, it is expected to have little impact on the infant. There is a lack of experience using this drug in children under 15, so caution is advised. Elderly patients may have reduced body function, so care should be taken, including adjusting the dosage. Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, and hypotension; appropriate treatment such as inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, and administration of activated charcoal is needed in these cases. Long-term high-dose administration has been reported to cause retinal changes, so caution is required for prolonged use.
