Thioctic acid supplementation, treatment of inner ear hearing loss and Leigh syndrome
Thioctic acid is administered when the demand increases due to intense physical labor and is used to treat Leigh syndrome and toxic or noise-induced sensorineural hearing loss. However, if no effect is observed after about one month of treatment, it is advisable not to continue. Thioctic acid helps improve hearing loss caused by various reasons.
The usual adult dose is 10~25mg of thioctic acid once daily by intravenous injection. The dose may be adjusted according to age and symptoms.
This medication is in an ampoule form, thus care must be taken when cutting the glass vial for use. Glass fragments may mix with the injection solution, so particular caution must be exercised when administering to children or the elderly. After using this medication, symptoms such as decreased appetite, nausea, and diarrhea may occur. Additionally, rash, headache, dizziness, and palpitations may also occur, so any abnormal symptoms should be monitored. In elderly patients, special care should be taken such as reducing the dosage because physical functions may be diminished. When administered intravenously, it is advisable to control the injection speed as slowly as possible to reduce the occurrence of side effects.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to light, so it should be stored in a container that does not allow light to enter. Moreover, it is recommended to store the medication at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Storing it this way helps maintain the drug's effectiveness and safety.
