Recurrent herpes labialis is a viral infection that occurs repeatedly around the lips. This initial treatment involves antiviral agents, which help to prevent the progression of symptoms and facilitate rapid recovery. It is also effective for pain relief and reducing inflammation. Starting treatment early can reduce the severity of symptoms. These medications help lower the possibility of recurrence. It is used for the initial treatment of recurrent herpes labialis.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Apply a sufficient amount to cover the edges of the affected area 5 times a day for 5 days. Treatment should begin as soon as initial symptoms and signs appear.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals with certain infections. For example, it should not be used in patients with bacterial infections such as tuberculosis or syphilis, fungal infections such as candidiasis or tinea, and other viral infections excluding herpes simplex, as it may worsen symptoms. Additionally, it should not be used by individuals with a history of allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to this medication, patients with severe immunosuppression such as bone marrow transplant recipients or AIDS patients. Patients with eczematous otitis externa and perforated eardrums should also exercise caution, as using this medication may delay healing. It is advisable that patients with skin ulcers, severe burns or frostbite, dermatitis around the mouth, acne, or rosacea avoid using this medication. Nursing women, patients under 18 years of age, and those with a history of myocardial infarction should also avoid this medication. This medication should not be applied to sensitive areas such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. It is preferable not to take this medication with certain other drugs, especially being cautious of interactions with acyclovir or probenecid. During treatment, it is generally safe to avoid breastfeeding unless under special circumstances. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should only use this medication after consulting with a physician, and elderly patients should be observed closely as they are at higher risk for side effects. Various skin reactions such as dryness, peeling, burning sensations, tingling, redness, pigmentation, and other symptoms may occur on the skin during use. If these symptoms are severe or persistent, immediately discontinue use and consult with a healthcare provider. Long-term use may result in steroid side effects such as thinning skin or dilation of blood vessels, so dosage and duration must be strictly adhered to. Additionally, using this medication extensively or with occlusive bandaging can lead to systemic side effects, so caution is required. The treatment duration is typically limited to within 5 days; if symptoms do not improve or worsen, discontinue use and consult with a physician. This medication is only for treating herpes labialis on the lips or around the mouth, and if it is difficult to distinguish whether the infection is bacterial or fungal, a specialist's diagnosis is required. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept sealed in its original container. Transferring to other containers may compromise the quality of the medication or pose a risk of misuse.
