Summary

Main use
Treatment of insomnia
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Use the lowest effective dose of this medication. The recommended daily dose for adults is 1mg. If clinically necessary, the dose may be increased to 2-3mg. Because this medication may impair driving or other activities that require full alertness the following day, take it once immediately before bedtime, allowing at least 7-8 hours between taking the medication and waking. Do not exceed the recommended dose of 3mg; take once immediately before bedtime. For elderly or debilitated patients, do not exceed 2mg per day. For patients with severe hepatic impairment or those taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, do not exceed 2mg per day (see Interactions). For patients taking central nervous system depressants, dose adjustment may be necessary because of the potential for additive effects. Taking this medication with or immediately after a high-fat/high-calorie meal is expected to slow its absorption and reduce its effect on sleep latency.

How to take

Precautions

This medication acts as a central nervous system depressant and may cause drowsiness or impaired performance the next day, so caution is needed when engaging in risky activities such as driving or operating machinery. Taking this medication with other central nervous system depressants or alcohol may enhance the effects, increasing the risk of side effects, so it is advisable not to use them together. It is not recommended to take this medication at bedtime or with other sleeping pills at night, and taking more than the recommended dose or using it without sufficient sleep time may increase the risk of daytime cognitive dysfunction. Elderly or weakened patients may experience drowsiness and decreased consciousness from this medication, increasing the risk of falls, so dosage should be reduced and used cautiously. If insomnia persists, there may be physical or mental disorders, thus requiring medical evaluation. Rarely, patients may experience swelling of the tongue, throat, or larynx after starting this medication or during treatment, and in severe cases, anaphylactic reactions such as difficulty breathing may occur, so immediate medical attention should be sought if any unusual symptoms arise. Unusual behavior, aggression, hallucinations, or complex behaviors such as driving or eating while asleep may occur, so if such symptoms appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. This medication may lead to abuse and dependence, so it should not be overdosed and should be taken according to a physician's instructions, especially in patients with a history of alcohol or drug abuse. The dosing time must be just before sleep; if taken while awake, it can cause memory loss, hallucinations, dizziness, etc. This medication should not be administered to children under 18, patients with acute respiratory failure, those with certain hereditary lactose-related disorders, or patients with hypersensitivity. In the elderly and weakened patients, dosage should be reduced, and dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired liver or kidney function or those taking certain medications together. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor before use, as its safety has not been fully established. Overdosage can lead to severe consciousness decline or respiratory depression, so immediate treatment at a healthcare facility is required. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to maintain quality.
