Treatment of insomnia
This medicine is used for insomnia, which is the difficulty in falling asleep or maintaining sleep.
Use the lowest effective dose of this medication. The recommended daily dose for adults is 1mg. If clinically necessary, the dose may be increased to 2-3mg. Because this medication may impair driving or other activities that require full alertness the following day, take it once immediately before bedtime, allowing at least 7-8 hours between taking the medication and waking. Do not exceed the recommended dose of 3mg; take once immediately before bedtime. For elderly or debilitated patients, do not exceed 2mg per day. For patients with severe hepatic impairment or those taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, do not exceed 2mg per day (see Interactions). For patients taking central nervous system depressants, dose adjustment may be necessary because of the potential for additive effects. Taking this medication with or immediately after a high-fat/high-calorie meal is expected to slow its absorption and reduce its effect on sleep latency.
This medication is a central nervous system depressant, and may cause drowsiness and behavioral disturbances after taking it; therefore, caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Combination with other central nervous system depressants or alcohol can enhance the effect and may be dangerous, so co-administration should be avoided. It should be taken in line with bedtime, and if sufficient sleep time is not secured after taking, the risk of cognitive impairment the next day increases. Elderly or frail patients have an increased risk of falls due to this medication, so the dosage should be reduced and closely monitored. If sleep disturbances persist, there may be other physical or mental conditions, and a physician's evaluation is required. Allergic reactions or serious side effects such as angioedema may occur rarely, so if such symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. Complex sleep behaviors, such as driving or eating while asleep, may occur, and if such symptoms arise, this medication should be discontinued. This drug can lead to abuse and dependence, therefore it should be taken according to the physician's prescription and instructions, particularly caution is needed for individuals with a history of substance abuse. Patients with impaired liver or kidney function, elderly individuals, and those with depression need dose adjustments and careful monitoring. Pregnant or breastfeeding women must consult a physician before taking this medication, and it is not used in children as safety and efficacy have not been established. In cases of overdose, severe consciousness suppression or respiratory depression may occur, so the prescribed dose must be adhered to, and if overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to maintain the drug's quality and safety.
