Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
Zinc can become deficient during total parenteral nutrition (TPN), making it important to provide appropriate supplementation. Zinc is an essential mineral for maintaining immune function and wound healing, with deficiency potentially leading to various complications. Therefore, zinc supplementation helps to improve nutritional status and maintain health in patients receiving TPN.
For metabolically stable TPN patients, the dosage is 2.5 to 4 mg/day. For adult patients with fluid loss in the small intestine, an additional 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (amount of excretion) should be administered. For acute burn conditions, the dosage is 4.5 to 6 mg/day. Use as prescribed by a physician, and adjust the dosage based on plasma trace element levels.
Children under 5 years of age should take 100 ug/kg/day. Premature infants weighing 3 kg or less should take 300 ug/kg/day.
This medication should not be injected directly into the peripheral vein without dilution. The reason is that direct injection may cause inflammation in the vein or potentially harm the kidneys with excess zinc. The amount of zinc included in this medication is very low, so toxic symptoms are generally rare. When mixing this drug with TPN solutions, it is recommended to work in a place with special equipment to maintain sterility. Before injection, the medication should be visually checked for any precipitate or discoloration. Zinc administration may reduce copper levels, so it is necessary to periodically check blood levels of copper and zinc. This drug is primarily excreted through the intestines and kidneys; therefore, caution is needed in patients with poor excretory function, as zinc may accumulate in the body. This medication should be used during pregnancy or in women of childbearing potential only when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. Zinc can cross the placenta and be transferred to the fetus, and it may also be present in breast milk. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and coordination disorders may occur. Calcium intake may help prevent toxicity due to excess zinc. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in a dry place at room temperature within sealed packaging. Since it does not contain preservatives, any unused medication should be discarded.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent exposure to air, and it is safe to store at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is advisable to keep it in a cool, dry place until use.
