Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in patients with obesity
This medication is used as a short-term adjunctive treatment for weight loss in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or in patients with a BMI of 27 or higher with accompanying risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, who have not responded to appropriate dietary measures or exercise. It should be used alone and not in combination with other appetite suppressants. BMI is used as an indicator to assess the degree of obesity by calculating weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. This medication is used to effectively assist in weight loss and improve health risks associated with obesity.
Adults: Administer 25 mg of diethylpropion hydrochloride orally 3 times daily, 1 hour before meals. The maximum daily dose is 75 mg, and the last dose should be taken no later than 4 hours before bedtime. To minimize the potential for abuse, prescribe or dispense the lowest possible dose during the initial period (within 2 weeks), adjusting the dose individually to achieve an adequate response. This medication should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use of this medication, treatment may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (at least 1.8 kg of weight loss, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication must not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants and should be used alone for a short duration only. Combining this medication with other drugs for weight loss is not recommended due to the lack of established safety and efficacy. This medication should be prescribed strictly as its weight loss effect may not be significant even when used with dietary measures. Long-term use may lead to drug abuse and dependency, therefore careful usage is required. If signs of mental dependence appear, the dosage should be gradually reduced, and sudden discontinuation should be avoided as it could trigger symptoms such as fatigue and depression. If angina, fainting, peripheral edema, or exercise-induced breathing difficulties occur, use should be discontinued immediately and pulmonary arterial hypertension should be checked. There is a potential risk of serious cardiovascular adverse reactions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension and valvular heart disease, so cardiac testing may be required before treatment. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain diseases or conditions (e.g., hypertension, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, heart disease, depression, etc.). Patients with mild cardiovascular diseases or hypertension should have their blood pressure and cardiovascular status monitored regularly during administration. Patients with epilepsy should be closely observed for seizure occurrences and may require dosage adjustments as needed. Common side effects include insomnia, irritability, dizziness, anxiety, restlessness, dry mouth, epigastric pain, palpitations, elevated blood pressure, ECG changes, movement disorders, blurred vision, hyperactivity, restlessness, unusual euphoria, discomfort, and sometimes depression, tremors, dilated pupils, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, unpleasant taste, xerostomia, stomatitis, and other gastrointestinal disturbances, erectile dysfunction, dysmenorrhea, changes in sexual desire, menstrual disorders, and gynecomastia. This medication affects the central nervous system, so caution is advised for individuals driving or operating hazardous machinery. This medication may interact with other medications, so it is crucial to consult with healthcare professionals regarding other medications being taken. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised not to use this medication, and women who could become pregnant should also use caution. Children under the age of 16 should not use this medication, and elderly patients should avoid use due to potential renal function decline. In case of overdose, symptoms of toxicity and serious side effects may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention for detoxification and symptomatic treatment. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in a tightly sealed container.
