Improvement of nutritional status through zinc supplementation.
Patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) may become deficient in zinc, so zinc supplementation is necessary. Zinc aids in wound healing and immune function and supports normal growth and development. Thus, appropriate zinc supplementation during TPN maintains the patient's health and promotes recovery.
Use as prescribed by a physician, adjusting the dose based on plasma trace element levels. Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adult patients with fluid loss in the small intestine: an additional 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or an additional 17.1 mg/kg (amount of excretion) Acute burn situation: 4.5 to 6 mg/day.
Children under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day.
This medication should not be injected directly into the peripheral vein without dilution. Direct injection may cause phlebitis or kidney damage due to zinc. The amount of zinc in this medication is very low, so typical toxic symptoms rarely occur. When mixing this medication with TPN solutions, it is advisable to work in a special environment that can maintain sterility. Also, ensure that there are no precipitates or discoloration in the solution before injection. Administering zinc with copper may lower copper levels in the blood, so it is necessary to periodically check blood zinc and copper levels. This medication is excreted from the body through the small intestine and kidneys, so patients with impaired kidney or small intestine function should be cautious of zinc accumulation in the body. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should only use this medication when the therapeutic benefits are considered to outweigh the risks. Zinc can cross the placenta and may be present in breast milk. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, dizziness, and abdominal pain may occur, so caution is required. Adequate calcium intake may help prevent any toxicity associated with excess zinc. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, in a dry place at room temperature. It does not contain preservatives, so any unused medication should be discarded.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container, preferably at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. This will help maintain the drug's efficacy and safety.
