Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication assists in improving blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes in conjunction with diet and exercise. It can also be used as monotherapy, and if blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy due to a lack of prior diabetes medication experience, it is taken in conjunction with metformin. Additionally, this medication is used when blood sugar control is insufficient with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin in monotherapy. If blood sugar control is not attained with combinations of sulfonylureas and metformin, thiazolidinediones and metformin, or insulin and metformin, this medication can be added to enhance therapeutic efficacy. This combination therapy effectively improves blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication may cause rare but severe allergic reactions, and if symptoms such as rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur after taking the medication, it should be discontinued immediately and a doctor consulted. During the use of this medication, acute pancreatitis may develop, so if severe abdominal pain or vomiting occurs, immediate medical attention is required. This medication should not be used by patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, nor should it be administered to those with known allergies to this medication or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function should have their dosage adjusted, and regular kidney function tests are necessary before and during treatment. Since there is a risk of hypoglycemia, caution should be exercised for signs of low blood sugar while using this medication in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylureas, and dosage adjustments for those medications may be necessary. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication, and its safety and efficacy have not been established for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. Elderly patients may be at risk for diminished kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function checks are necessary. In case of overdose, measures should be taken to remove the drug from the gastrointestinal tract, monitor the condition through ECG, and if necessary, some drug removal may be achieved through hemodialysis. Interactions with other medications taken concurrently with this medication are generally minimal, but if taking digoxin or cyclosporine, healthcare professionals should be informed for appropriate management.
