Thyroid protection against radiation exposure
This medication is used to protect the thyroid gland from possible damage caused by exposure to radiation.
Adults and adolescents (aged 12 years and older): 130 mg of potassium iodide once daily. Do not exceed the single dose within 24 hours. This medication can be crushed or mixed in beverages (water, milk, juice) for administration.
Children (aged 3 years to less than 12 years): 1 time daily 65 mg Infants (aged 1 month to less than 3 years): 1 time daily 32.5 mg Newborns (from birth to less than 1 month): 1 time daily 16.25 mg
This medication contains potassium iodide and should not be used by patients with certain diseases or conditions. For example, individuals allergic to this medication or its ingredients, patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, patients with herpes dermatitis, patients with vasculitis, patients with thyroid nodules with heart diseases, and those with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not take this medication. Additionally, patients receiving treatment from a doctor, those with heart or kidney dysfunction, patients with thyroid dysfunction, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and newborns should use this medication with caution. During the course of this medication, allergic reactions such as rash, fever, and difficulty breathing may occur; if these symptoms appear, stoppage of the medication and consultation with a specialist are necessary. Long-term use may lead to thyroid dysfunction, gastrointestinal issues, and neurological symptoms, thus regular monitoring and testing are required. In cases of overdose, gastrointestinal disorders or heart-related side effects may occur, hence caution is needed. This medication is used for thyroid protection following radiation incidents, and is especially prioritized for children or young individuals. Patients with goiter or unstable thyroid function must receive a doctor's diagnosis before taking this medication. It is recommended to take this medication right after meal and dissolve it in a drink before ingestion. There may be interactions with other medications, so especially when taken with lithium preparations or potassium-containing drugs, it's advisable to follow specialist instructions. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult with a doctor before intake, as it may affect the thyroid function of the fetus and newborn. Children and the elderly require dosage adjustments and precautions due to different bodily functions. Before and after taking this medication, it may affect results of some thyroid function tests, thus the testing schedule should be discussed with a doctor. Finally, it is important to keep this medication out of reach of children, away from direct sunlight, and at a cool, dry place. Also, for quality preservation, do not transfer to another container.

This medication is sensitive to light and should be stored in a light-protective, airtight container. It is recommended to maintain a storage temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius.
