Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Administer 100 μg of selenium as an intramuscular or intravenous injection daily. If necessary, the dosage may be increased to 200 μg daily. If this medication is added to a total parenteral nutrition (TPN) basic injection, the daily dosage must be 100 μg of selenium.

Precautions

This medication contains selenium and should not be used in patients with selenium toxicity. It should not be administered to patients with allergic reactions to this medication or its components. Pain during injection or rare allergic reactions may occur, and if symptoms such as dermatitis, foul odor during sweating or breathing, hair loss, anxiety, or vomiting appear, use should be stopped immediately. When mixing with other intravenous fluids, care should be taken to prevent precipitation, and if the solution's acidity (pH) is too low or mixed with reducing agents like Vitamin C, selenium may precipitate and not be absorbed by the body. After mixing, it is essential to check for precipitation; if there is any or if the color has changed, it should not be used. This medication contains sodium, so patients who require a low-sodium diet should consider this. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication when the therapeutic effect outweighs the risk, as there have been reports of fetal abnormalities in animal studies. Lactating women should discontinue breastfeeding or this medication, as the safety of this drug has not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms may include a garlic-like odor from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and long-term overdoses may affect the growth of nails and hair and cause neurological disorders. In case of overdose, gastric lavage, induction of urination, high-dose Vitamin C administration, or dialysis to remove selenium in very severe cases may be necessary. The medication Dimercaprol should not be used as it may actually increase selenium toxicity. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in a sealed container, away from light, in a dry place at room temperature. Once opened, it should be used immediately, and transferring to another container is not recommended for maintaining quality and safety.
