This drug is effective for the prevention and treatment of vitamin C deficiency, especially scurvy, in acute conditions or when oral administration is difficult. It is also used in situations where vitamin C needs increase, such as in pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those engaged in heavy physical labor. Additionally, it helps promote capillary hemostasis, metabolic disturbances due to drug administration, and the formation of bone structure and union in fractures. It has a positive impact on melasma, freckles, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and photosensitive dermatitis. Overall, this drug is used to prevent and treat various conditions related to vitamin C deficiency.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

As ascorbic acid, administer 50-1,000 mg once to several times daily by subcutaneous, intramuscular, or intravenous injection. Adjust dosage according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug should be handled very carefully as glass fragments may enter the injection container when opened. Extra caution is necessary when used for children and the elderly. This drug contains sodium bisulfite, which may cause allergic reactions, and the risk of asthmatic attacks may increase in asthma patients. Therefore, caution is advised when administering this drug to asthma patients or individuals sensitive to sulfites. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or those with specific kidney diseases, gout, Mediterranean anemia, or G6PD deficiency should not use it. Particularly, patients with G6PD deficiency should be cautious as high doses of this drug may lead to hemolysis. This drug may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, and insomnia. Moreover, taking over 1 gram per day may increase the risk of diarrhea and kidney stones, and taking more than 600 milligrams may lead to diuretic effects. Overdose may cause kidney stones and diarrhea; if such symptoms occur, administration should be immediately stopped, and treatment should be sought. This drug is mainly taken orally but may be administered as an injection in cases of digestive disorder or urgency, and rapid conversion back to oral administration should be made if possible. Furthermore, this drug may interact with other medications, so caution is needed when taking it alongside aspirin, iron supplements, certain antibiotics, and oral contraceptives. The safety of this drug during pregnancy has not been fully confirmed, so it should only be used when necessary, and high doses of over 1 gram should be avoided. This drug can be excreted in breast milk, but it is known to be non-harmful to infants at typical dosages.
