Precautions

This medicine contains aspartame, an artificial sweetener, which is broken down into phenylalanine in the body. Patients with phenylketonuria, a hereditary condition that requires limiting phenylalanine intake, should not take this medicine. The daily acceptable dose of aspartame is limited to 40 mg per kg of body weight, so the minimum amount should be used when taking this medicine. For example, for an adult weighing 60 kg, the maximum daily dosage is 2.4 g. Patients who have hypersensitivity to this medication, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children under 2 years of age should not take this medicine. Additionally, it contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should avoid taking it. During treatment with this medication, certain drugs should not be taken concurrently. For example, theophylline may interfere with the metabolism of this medicine, while cimetidine, praziquantel, and dexamethasone may increase blood concentrations of this medicine. Conversely, ritonavir, phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital may decrease blood concentrations of this medicine. Patients with liver or kidney dysfunction should consult with their doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine. Additionally, this medicine contains Yellow No. 5 dye, so caution is needed for those allergic to this component. Rarely, febrile reactions or systemic erythema may be reported, and temporary hair loss may occur. Women who might become pregnant should confirm pregnancy status before using this medicine. Animal studies have shown that it can cause fetal harm, therefore effective contraception should be used during the treatment period and for 3 days after treatment. This medicine may sometimes reduce white blood cell count or elevate liver function tests, so regular blood tests and liver function tests may be necessary. In cases of overdose, symptomatic treatment such as gastric lavage may be needed. Particularly in areas where tapeworm infection is prevalent, using this medicine for treating neurocysticercosis may lead to neurological symptoms such as seizures or increased intracranial pressure due to the destruction of parasites in the brain; if these symptoms occur, consulting healthcare providers immediately is necessary. This medicine should be stored out of reach of children, protected from direct sunlight, and kept in a dry and cool place at room temperature.
