Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • difficulty controlling blood sugar
View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone when starting treatment. However, if blood sugar control is difficult with initial monotherapy, it can be taken in conjunction with metformin. Additionally, when sufficient blood sugar control is not achieved with existing therapies using sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, this medication may be added for combination therapy. Furthermore, when multiple medications are used and blood sugar control is still inadequate, this medication can be used together to enhance effectiveness. In summary, this medication is used either alone or in combination with other antidiabetic drugs to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Precautions

This medication is an antidiabetic agent made with the ingredient sitagliptin. First, caution should be taken as serious allergic reactions may occur while taking this medication, including anaphylaxis, angioedema, and severe skin rashes or exfoliative skin disorders. If such symptoms occur, stop taking the medication immediately and visit a hospital. Second, there is a risk of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). If symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or severe abdominal discomfort occur after taking this medication, consult a doctor immediately. Third, this medication is not used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Fourth, patients with impaired kidney function may need dose adjustments, and regular kidney function tests are important. Fifth, when used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylurea medications, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so careful monitoring of blood sugar changes is necessary. Sixth, long-term use may result in side effects such as headache, upper respiratory infection, nasopharyngitis, diarrhea, nausea, and persistent symptoms should be discussed with a doctor. Seventh, it is recommended that pregnant or breastfeeding women avoid using this medication. Eighth, in case of overdose, visit a medical institution immediately for appropriate treatment and monitoring. Blood dialysis may be considered if necessary. Finally, while this medication is known not to increase cardiovascular disease risk even with long-term use, elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function should be more cautious.
