This medication is used in conjunction with dietary management and exercise therapy to assist in the control of blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone in patients who are starting treatment, and if monotherapy is insufficient, it can be taken in combination with metformin. Additionally, when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin monotherapy, this medication is added. It is used at various treatment stages and effectively improves blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Dosage and Administration

Precautions

This medication may cause severe allergic reactions; if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur after taking it, stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical attention. Additionally, serious inflammation of the pancreas, known as acute pancreatitis, may occur; therefore, if severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea appears during use, consult a healthcare professional immediately. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, as well as those who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its components, should not take it. Patients with impaired kidney function may have difficulties in excreting the drug, necessitating dose adjustment and regular kidney function tests. While taking this medication, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, especially when taken in conjunction with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas; thus, blood sugar levels should be carefully monitored. Rare side effects such as severe joint pain or a blistering disease resembling dermatitis herpetiformis have been reported, and if these symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. The use of this medication is not recommended in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and safety and effectiveness have not been established for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. Elderly patients may experience decreased kidney function, so careful dose adjustments are needed, along with regular assessments of kidney function. In cases of overdose, general emergency measures should be followed, and if necessary, some of the drug can be removed through hemodialysis. This medication has minimal interactions with other drugs, but be sure to inform healthcare providers of any medication taken and receive appropriate monitoring.
