Efficacy & effects

Improvement in Type 2 Diabetes (Blood Sugar Control)

  • Blood sugar control issues in Type 2 diabetes patients
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to improve blood sugar control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Patients are advised to take this medication along with dietary and exercise therapies for maximum effectiveness. Although it can be used as monotherapy, it may be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin if blood sugar is not adequately controlled with other hypoglycemic agents. Additionally, nutritional counseling and weight loss are also important treatment elements and should be maintained alongside regular exercise. This comprehensive management helps in blood sugar control and supports the efficacy of the medication. Therefore, this medication is effectively used for blood sugar management in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Precautions

This medication is primarily used for blood sugar control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. This medication may affect heart function, so it should not be used in patients with congestive heart failure or those with a history of heart failure. During treatment, careful monitoring for signs of fluid retention, such as swelling, sudden weight gain, or difficulty breathing, should be performed. If any heart failure symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately for appropriate treatment, which may include reducing or discontinuing the dose of this medication if necessary. This medication requires the presence of insulin to exert its blood sugar-lowering effects and is not suitable for patients with Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It should also not be administered to patients with severely impaired liver function, severe renal impairment, active or past bladder cancer, pregnant women or females who may become pregnant. This medication may cause weight gain and fluid retention, and there may be an increased risk of fractures in women, so caution is required. The risk of hypoglycemia exists, particularly when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, so symptoms of hypoglycemia should be closely monitored, and the doses of concomitant medications should be adjusted as needed. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels and liver function tests is necessary during treatment, and any symptoms suggestive of liver damage (fatigue, loss of appetite, jaundice, etc.) should be reported to a physician immediately. Pre-menopausal women should use appropriate contraceptive methods, as ovulation may be stimulated while taking this medication. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients should inform their physicians or pharmacists about any other medications they are taking. Finally, it is advisable not to use this medication in children or individuals under 18 due to lack of established safety and efficacy.
