Reduction of cholesterol in patients with hypercholesterolemia and sitosterolemia and risk of atherosclerosis
This medication is used to reduce cholesterol and various lipid parameters associated with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia. It is especially effective in lowering elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (Apo B). Additionally, it is used in conjunction with or as an alternative to other treatments for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. For patients with homozygous sitosterolemia, it is administered as an adjunct therapy to reduce plant sterols like sitosterol and campesterol. This medication must be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet, and if there are secondary causes, it is important to treat those first. Thus, this medication is used to reduce the risk of hyperlipidemia and its related atherosclerotic vascular diseases.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 10 mg once daily, administered without regard to meals.
This medication should not be used in patients who have hypersensitivity to any components of this medication. It is advisable not to use this medication in conjunction with certain lipid-lowering agents (statins) in patients with severely impaired liver function or those with persistently elevated serum aminotransferase levels without explanation. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication in combination with statins or fenofibrate. This medication is not recommended for patients with moderate to severe liver impairment and should be used cautiously. During treatment with this medication, symptoms such as headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and myalgia may occur, and if these symptoms persist or worsen, consultation with a physician is necessary. If myalgia, muscle weakness, or unexplained myasthenia occurs, inform the medical staff immediately, and discontinue the medication if necessary. Regular liver function tests may be required, so liver enzyme levels should be monitored regularly, and report any symptoms of liver dysfunction to a physician promptly. Interactions may occur when taken with certain medications, so it is essential to inform your healthcare provider of any medications you are currently taking. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must consult with a physician before taking this medication, as do those who are breastfeeding. The use of this medication is not recommended for children under 6 years of age, and in children and adolescents over 6 years old, it should be used under a physician's supervision. Elderly patients may use this medication; however, caution is advised as sensitivity may vary by age.
