Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (including erosive esophagitis), treatment and prevention of recurrence of Helicobacter pylori-positive peptic ulcers, alleviation of gastrointestinal symptoms related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, treatment and prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers, treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and preventive maintenance therapy for rebleeding of gastric ulcers.
This medication is used for long-term maintenance therapy to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and erosive reflux esophagitis, and to prevent recurrence. It is also utilized in combination with antibiotics for the treatment and prevention of recurrence of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Additionally, it provides short-term relief from upper gastrointestinal symptoms such as pain, discomfort, and burning sensations associated with NSAID use. It also aids in the treatment of gastric ulcers and the prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers related to ongoing NSAID therapy. It is used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and to prevent rebleeding of gastric or duodenal ulcers, thereby stabilizing the patient's condition. Overall, it improves gastrointestinal health and is effective in treating various gastrointestinal diseases.
This medication must be swallowed with liquid, and should not be chewed or crushed. 1) Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks - If esophagitis remains untreated or symptoms persist, an additional 4 weeks of treatment is required - Long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence: 20 mg once daily - Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms without esophagitis: 1
Adolescents over 12 years - Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks - Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms without esophagitis: 20 mg once daily - Symptoms
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. It must not be taken by those with hypersensitivity to this drug or its components, or to benzimidazole derivatives. Patients allergic to certain antibiotics such as amoxicillin or clarithromycin during Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy should also refrain from using this drug. It is advisable for individuals with a history of myocardial infarction or those who are breastfeeding to avoid this medication. This drug contains the dye Yellow No. 5; therefore, those with allergies or hypersensitivity to this component should use it cautiously. While taking this medication, there may be various adverse reactions. Blood-related issues such as leukopenia or thrombocytopenia may occur rarely, and severe allergic reactions may also happen infrequently. Electrolyte disturbances like hypomagnesemia have been reported rarely, and this may accompany calcium or potassium deficiencies. Mental symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, and hallucinations may occur, and headaches or dizziness may frequently be experienced. Gastrointestinal issues including abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting can occur commonly, although severe problems such as pancreatitis or gastric mucosal inflammation may rarely arise. Severe skin reactions such as rashes, itching, hair loss, and in severe cases, Stevens-Johnson syndrome have also been reported. Muscle pain or joint pain may occur, and renal issues such as nephritis can very rarely be encountered. This medication may mask symptoms of malignant tumors when used over a long duration, so if there are symptoms like weight loss, recurrent vomiting, blood vomiting, or black stools, consulting a doctor is essential. Regular examinations are necessary for prolonged use over one year, and immediate medical attention should be sought if there are changes in symptoms. This drug can lower gastric acidity, increasing the risk of bacterial infections; therefore, if diarrhea persists for a long time, the healthcare provider should be informed. There may be an increased risk of fractures with prolonged high-dose use, so periodic monitoring is required for those at risk of osteoporosis. Additionally, prolonged use beyond three months may lead to hypomagnesemia, necessitating regular checks of magnesium levels. This drug has numerous interactions with other medications, so caution is required, especially when used with anticoagulants, antibiotics, antiviral drugs, and anticonvulsants. Patients should always inform their doctor or pharmacist about any currently taken medications, as interactions with other drugs can cause adverse effects. Data on the safety of this medication during pregnancy are limited, so pregnant women should take it cautiously under a doctor’s guidance, and it is preferable to avoid it during breastfeeding. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so appropriate management should be provided based on symptoms, and this drug binds strongly to proteins in the blood, making it unrecoverable through dialysis. Lastly, this drug should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to another container can lead to quality degradation or accidents, so caution is advised.
