Reduction of risks for myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medicine helps to reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases. It has been shown to lower the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease and in diabetic patients. It also reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular surgery, hospitalization for congestive heart failure, and angina in patients already suffering from heart disease. When used for the treatment of dyslipidemia, it helps to decrease cholesterol and triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol, thus improving blood lipid levels. It is particularly effective as an adjunctive therapy in patients with various types of dyslipidemia and hyperlipidemia that are difficult to manage with diet alone. This medicine is used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once a day; if further LDL cholesterol reduction is needed, it can be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once a day. The usual dosage range is 10 to 80 mg once a day. Initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and the patient's responses, with lipid levels analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting therapy.
