Improvement of hypertension and diabetic kidney disease
This medication is used in the treatment of hypertension, particularly in preventing or slowing the progression of kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Thus, it is useful in maintaining cardiovascular health and protecting kidney function.
This medication can be taken irrespective of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For adults with hypertension, the usual starting dose of Losartan Potassium is 50 mg orally once daily. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the dose can be adjusted to 100 mg once daily or divided into two doses per day. In patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension, usually 50 mg once daily is administered, with potential increases depending on blood pressure response.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, a dosage of 25 mg once daily is given, with possible titration up to a maximum of 50 mg once daily depending on blood pressure response.
This drug may cause serious damage to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it must be immediately discontinued upon confirmation of pregnancy. Taking this drug during pregnancy can inhibit the development of the fetus's lungs and increase the risk of problems such as skeletal deformities or kidney dysfunction. This drug should not be administered to pregnant women or women of childbearing potential. Patients with severely impaired liver function, certain hereditary diseases, or allergies to this medication or its components should not take it. Caution should be exercised in elderly patients, patients with compromised kidney function, and patients at risk for sudden drops in blood pressure when using this medication. Side effects can include dizziness, muscle cramps, back pain, cough, headaches, dyspepsia, among others, and rarely, serious reactions such as angioedema or liver function abnormalities may occur. Since this drug lowers blood pressure, it should be discontinued immediately and medical attention sought if symptoms of hypotension or loss of consciousness occur. There is a risk of elevated potassium levels, so care must be taken not to take potassium supplements or potassium-containing medications concurrently. Patients taking this medication should have their blood pressure, kidney function, and blood potassium levels monitored regularly, and any abnormal signs should be reported to their healthcare provider. Breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication, and if necessary, should discontinue breastfeeding. This medication will not be administered to children, especially those under 6 years of age or those with significantly compromised kidney function. This drug may interact with other blood pressure medications or specific medications, so be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any current medications being taken. When storing the medication, keep it out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container.
