Treatment of hypertension and nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes
This medication effectively controls blood pressure in patients with hypertension, helping to prevent cardiovascular complications. It is also used to slow the progression of nephropathy in patients with both hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is useful in reducing the risk of kidney damage due to hypertension as well as diabetes. This medication contributes to improving the overall health status of the patient and preventing complications during treatment.
It is recommended that this medication be taken at the same time every day, regardless of meals. For the treatment of hypertension, an initial and maintenance dose of 50 mg orally once daily as Losartan Potassium is recommended; if the antihypertensive effect is insufficient, it can be divided into twice daily doses or increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily. For the treatment of nephropathy in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes, the usual dose is 50 mg once daily; adjustments will depend on blood pressure.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older: (1) For patients weighing 20 kg to under 50 kg, a dose of 25 mg once daily is recommended, which can be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily. (2)
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters; therefore, it should not be taken by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, those with certain hereditary conditions, or patients who are allergic to this medication or its components. Particular caution is required for the elderly, patients with hyperkalemia, patients with slightly impaired liver function, and patients with heart valve disease when using this medication, as there is a risk that blood pressure may become too low; therefore, their condition should be carefully monitored. This medication can generally be used safely, but side effects such as dizziness, headache, muscle pain, dyspepsia, cough, and others may occur, so patients should consult a doctor if they experience unusual symptoms. When taken along with other blood pressure medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, or potassium supplements, blood potassium levels may become dangerously high, so patients should definitely consult with a physician before taking. During the use of this medication, it is important to regularly check blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels to monitor the condition. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women, and if it must be taken, it is advisable to cease breastfeeding. Additionally, caution should be taken when driving or operating machinery during the use of this medication, as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. In case of overdose, symptoms may include hypotension and rapid heartbeat; thus, immediate medical attention is needed. This medication is preferable not to be administered to children, especially those under the age of 6 or with severely impaired kidney function. Finally, this medication should be stored away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided.
