Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Amlodipine or Olmesartan Medoxomil is used for patients with essential hypertension where monotherapy is not sufficient for blood pressure control. These medications help to lower blood pressure by dilating blood vessels. This reduces the burden on the heart and contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular complications such as stroke and myocardial infarction. It helps maintain a healthy lifestyle by effectively controlling the patient's blood pressure. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of essential hypertension.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with allergies to any ingredients of this medication or similar drugs, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe liver dysfunction or aortic stenosis, patients with bile duct obstruction, patients undergoing kidney dialysis, patients in shock, and certain diabetes patients should not take this medication. Hypotensive patients who are deficient in fluid or salt may experience hypotension, so their condition should be closely monitored when starting treatment. Patients with heart-related diseases should be particularly cautious as rapid dilation of blood vessels can induce hypotension. Patients with heart failure or impaired renal function may experience changes in renal function; therefore, care should be taken. Patients with compromised liver function also need to be cautious when taking this medication. This medication can cause various side effects, commonly including dizziness, headache, hypotension, cough, dyspepsia, rash, and edema. Particularly during pregnancy, this drug may pose risks to the fetus; therefore, women who are planning pregnancy or currently pregnant should consult their physician. Breastfeeding women should either discontinue breastfeeding or stop taking this medication, as it can transfer into breast milk and affect the baby. Safety and effectiveness have not been established for children under 18 years of age, so it is not recommended. For the elderly, dose adjustment may be necessary due to the possibility of decreased renal and liver function. In cases of overdose, severe hypotension and symptoms due to vascular dilation can occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight and humidity, in a place where children cannot reach.
