Treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria and primary nocturnal enuresis
This medication is used to treat primary nocturnal enuresis in children aged 5 years and older. It also helps alleviate nocturnal urinary symptoms related to nocturia in adults. It is effective in improving the symptoms of unnecessary urination during the night, enhancing sleep quality, and reducing discomfort in daily life. Therefore, this medication assists patients experiencing difficulties due to nocturia.
Treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria (adults only): Administer desmopressin acetate 0.1mg orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient after one week, increase the dose to 0.2mg; if the effect remains insufficient, increase the dose at weekly intervals up to 0.4mg. Discontinue treatment if there is no clinical effect within 4 weeks after dose determination. Starting treatment with this medicine is not recommended in patients aged 65 years and older. If treatment is necessary in elderly patients, monitor serum sodium levels and other relevant parameters closely. (See Precautions for Use, section 5. General Precautions.)
Primary nocturnal enuresis (5 years and older): Administer desmopressin acetate 0.2mg orally at bedtime. If the effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased to 0.4mg. Whether to continue treatment should be determined after 3 months of administration, following a treatment-free period of at least 1 week.
This medication works by retaining water in the body, reducing urine output. When taking this medication, it is important to avoid drinking excessive amounts of water. Overhydration can lower sodium levels in the body, leading to hyponatremia and water intoxication, which in severe cases can result in coma. This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, those who are allergic to this medication or its components, patients with heart failure, kidney failure, or hyponatremia, and individuals with genetic disorders affecting lactose metabolism should not take this medication. Additionally, this medication should be used cautiously in certain patients such as those with hypertension, chronic kidney disease, women who may become pregnant, children, and the elderly. These individuals should consult a physician before using this medication. During treatment with this medication, fluid intake should be strictly limited, particularly minimizing water consumption from 1 hour before administration to 8 hours after administration. If kidney function is impaired, the amount of water that can be consumed during this period should be reduced further. This medication can cause side effects including hyponatremia, headache, nausea, weight gain, and allergic reactions; therefore, any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should exercise caution when taking this medication, using it only when absolutely necessary during pregnancy, and stopping breastfeeding while using this medication if possible. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, if you are taking any other medications, you must inform your doctor or pharmacist. In the case of an overdose, symptoms such as headache, nausea, seizures, and loss of consciousness may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to protect it from air and moisture. The storage temperature should be maintained at room temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. This will help preserve the medication's efficacy and safety over time.
