Precautions

This medication can cause serious side effects such as lactic acidosis, so caution is needed. Lactic acidosis is a condition in which lactic acid builds up excessively in the body, making it acidic, and if untreated, it can lead to death. This medication should not be administered to individuals with allergies to its active or inactive ingredients, or to patients with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is also contraindicated in patients with significantly reduced kidney function, or in those with acute conditions that can affect kidney function such as acute myocardial infarction, severe infections, or dehydration. Patients with liver dysfunction or those with heart failure and pulmonary dysfunction should use this medication with caution. It should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, and it is advisable to avoid it if planning to become pregnant. When using this medication, be cautious of symptoms of hypoglycemia, particularly when taken with sulfonylureas or insulin, as the risk of hypoglycemia is increased. If symptoms suspected of lactic acidosis such as abdominal pain, muscle pain, or lethargy occur, consult a doctor immediately. Regularly check kidney function, and discontinue or adjust dosage if abnormalities are found. If iodinated contrast agents need to be used for radiologic examinations, discontinue this medication for a certain period before and after the test and confirm kidney function. If surgery is planned, discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to surgery and only resume after normal kidney function is restored post-surgery. This medication can decrease vitamin B12 levels, so periodic monitoring for vitamin B12 deficiency is necessary during long-term use. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you are taking. Elderly individuals commonly experience reduced kidney function, so dosage adjustment and regular kidney function checks are necessary. It is not recommended for children and pediatric patients under 10 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. In cases of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis; hence, if suspected, seek proper treatment at a hospital immediately. Store this medication out of reach of children, avoid moisture, and do not transfer it to other containers.
