Improvement of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia
This medication helps lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It also increases HDL cholesterol levels, positively impacting cardiovascular health. It is effective in improving dyslipidemia when used in conjunction with dietary modifications. This medication is used to treat familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia as classified by Fredrickson.
For adults, the usual initial dose of pitavastatin calcium is 1 to 2 mg once daily. If the reduction effect on LDL cholesterol is not sufficient, the dose can be increased to a maximum of 4 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted appropriately every 4 weeks or more, depending on the levels of LDL cholesterol, treatment goals, and patient response. The treatment effect of this drug is maintained with continuous administration.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who have an allergy to this drug, those with active liver disease or persistently elevated liver enzyme levels of unknown cause, patients with severe liver impairment or biliary obstruction, and patients taking cyclosporine should avoid this medication. Furthermore, women who have myopathy or are pregnant or may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children are advised against using this medication. This product contains lactose, and individuals with lactose intolerance or certain genetic conditions should also avoid it. Patients with impaired kidney function or a history of liver impairment should use this medication cautiously. Co-administration with fibrates or niacin may cause muscle damage and worsening kidney function, so avoiding these combinations is advisable. People who consume large amounts of alcohol, those with hypothyroidism, elderly individuals, and those with muscle weakness should also exercise caution. During treatment with this medication, side effects such as muscle pain, weakness, abdominal pain, rash, and itching may occur. Symptoms of liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and decreased kidney function may also arise, necessitating regular testing. If muscle pain or tenderness becomes severe, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. This drug is used for treating hypercholesterolemia, and accurate diagnosis, dietary adjustments, and exercise therapy should be undertaken beforehand. Regular testing of blood lipid levels during treatment is essential to confirm its effectiveness, as is periodic liver function testing. This drug can interact with specific medications, so caution is warranted when taken with cyclosporine, fibrates, niacin, erythromycin, etc. Taking these medications together may significantly increase the risk of muscle damage and worsening kidney function, therefore consulting with a physician or pharmacist is advised. Elderly patients are at higher risk for side effects due to decreased bodily functions and should take caution while using it. Pregnant or nursing individuals should not take this medication, and women of childbearing potential should discontinue immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. The safety for children has not been established, so it's best not to use it. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of the reach of children and kept in its original container to maintain quality.
