This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It decreases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults aged 55 and over, or those with multiple risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, and low HDL cholesterol. It is also effective for vascular interventions and chronic stable angina. In patients with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for coronary artery disease, it can lower the risks of myocardial infarction and stroke. Additionally, in patients already diagnosed with coronary heart disease, it effectively reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular interventions, hospitalization due to congestive heart failure, and angina, thereby alleviating symptoms and preventing complications. Furthermore, it is used to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. As an adjunct for hyperlipidemia treatment, it also improves blood lipid levels.

Precautions

This medication may cause muscle problems, so if there is severe muscle pain or weakness, or if there is a significant increase in creatine kinase levels, use should be discontinued immediately. Patients with poor liver function or liver disease should not take this medication and should undergo regular liver function tests. This medication should not be used by pregnant or nursing women, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraceptive methods while taking it. When taken with certain medications, drug levels may increase and the risk of side effects may rise, so patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist if they are taking other medications. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function have a higher risk of myopathy, so caution is needed during use, and if symptoms occur, medical consultation is required immediately. If symptoms such as muscle pain, malaise, or fever occur during treatment, the physician should be informed immediately and tests should be conducted. This medication has not been sufficiently proven safe and effective for use in children, so it should not be used in children under 10 years of age.
