Reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improves hyperlipidemia
This medication helps to reduce various risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease. In particular, it decreases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults who have risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, in cases where coronary heart disease already exists, this medication lowers the risks of non-fatal myocardial infarction and stroke, the need for vascular interventions, hospitalization due to congestive heart failure, and the occurrence of angina. It is also effective in the treatment of hyperlipidemia and is used to decrease total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol while increasing HDL-cholesterol in patients with various types of dyslipidemia. It is especially useful when dietary control is difficult or when used in combination with other therapies. This medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and reduce risk factors.
Atorvastatin can be taken at any time of the day, regardless of food. The recommended initial dosage is 10 mg once daily; for those requiring greater LDL-cholesterol reduction, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Dosing may range from 10 to 80 mg once daily and should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient characteristics. Lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment.
This medication may cause muscle-related symptoms, so if muscle pain or weakness occurs, consult a physician immediately. In particular, if there is a significant increase in muscle enzyme levels or if myopathy is suspected, the medication should be discontinued. This medication may affect liver function, so patients with liver disease or elevated liver enzyme levels should not take it. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not use this medication, and females of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception during treatment. Children under 10 years of age and patients with certain genetic lactose metabolism disorders should also not take this medication. Those with a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, impaired kidney function, and the elderly should use this medication with caution and should closely monitor for the risk of myopathy. This medication has many drug interactions, so it is advisable to consult a doctor or pharmacist, especially when taking certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV treatments, and other lipid-lowering agents. Regular liver function tests and muscle enzyme tests should be conducted during treatment, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported immediately. This medication may increase blood concentration when taken with grapefruit juice, so caution is required. There is no specific antidote for overdose; appropriate treatment should be given based on symptoms, and it should be kept out of reach of children.
