Improvement of blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It is administered as an adjunct to diet and exercise therapy and can also be used for individuals who have not previously received diabetes medication treatment. Additionally, it is used in cases where sufficient blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy of metformin or combination therapy of linagliptin and metformin. For patients who struggle with blood sugar control even when combined with maximum doses of metformin and sulfonylureas or insulin, this medication can be used to enhance efficacy. It can also be used in conjunction with empagliflozin to assist with blood sugar control in cases where blood sugar control remains difficult. Overall, this medication is utilized in various scenarios to enhance blood sugar control.
This medication is administered twice daily with meals. The dosage should be determined considering the current treatment regimen, effectiveness, and tolerability of each patient, not exceeding the maximum recommended doses of linagliptin 2.5 mg and metformin 1000 mg for a total of 2 times a day. 1. If not previously treated with metformin: Start with an initial dose of this medication 2.5/500 mg, one tablet twice daily.
This medication is primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and helps with blood sugar control. However, it should not be administered to certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to any components of this medication, have type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic coma, or who have severe renal impairment should not use it. Additionally, it should not be given in cases of acute diseases that may affect renal function such as dehydration, severe infections, acute trauma, shock, or acute myocardial infarction. Patients with reduced liver function, severe gastrointestinal disorders, acute alcohol intoxication, very poor nutritional status, or pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid using this medication. When using this medication, caution regarding hypoglycemic symptoms is advised, especially when taken with sulfonylureas or insulin, as there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia necessitating dosage adjustments. Lactic acidosis, a severe side effect, can occur rarely, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, muscle weakness, or respiratory distress occur, immediate consultation with a physician is needed. Elderly patients with compromised renal function or conditions that can alter renal function should regularly undergo renal function tests. Patients with compromised cardiac function should also periodically monitor heart and kidney status when using this medication. This medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after examinations using radiopaque iodine contrast agents, and patients scheduled for surgery should also discontinue it prior to surgery and restart it after kidney function has recovered postoperatively. Rare side effects such as pancreatitis or blistering similar to pemphigoid may occur during treatment, so if severe abdominal pain or skin abnormalities develop during use, immediate consultation with medical personnel is advised. Long-term use may lower vitamin B12 levels, thus an evaluation of vitamin B12 levels and supplementation may be necessary if anemia or neurological symptoms occur. It is recommended that women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant avoid using this medication, and it is also advised not to use it while breastfeeding. This medication is not recommended for children under 10 years of age or adolescent patients, as safety and efficacy have not been established for this demographic. Elderly patients should periodically evaluate renal function when using this medication since renal impairment is common, and it should be administered at the minimal effective dose. In case of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis, and immediate hospital treatment is necessary, possibly requiring hemodialysis. This medication should be stored away from moisture in a tightly sealed container, and it is advisable not to transfer it to other containers.
