Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in adult type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered when there is no experience with diabetes medication or when blood sugar control is difficult with metformin alone. It can also be used to replace a combination therapy of linagliptin and metformin, or when a combination of maximum dose metformin and sulfonylurea is ineffective. If blood sugar control is still not adequate with insulin and metformin, it can also be administered in combination. Lastly, if blood sugar control is difficult even with a combination of maximum dose metformin and empagliflozin, it may be used in conjunction with empagliflozin. This medication effectively improves blood sugar control through various combination therapies.

How to take

The dosage of this medication should be determined within the range of a maximum daily dose of linagliptin 2.5 mg and metformin 1000 mg, considering the patient's current therapy regimen, efficacy, and tolerability. This medication is administered 2 times a day with meals. 1. Precautions

This medication is used for diabetes treatment, and one of its main ingredients, metformin, can cause rare but serious side effects such as lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. This medication includes linagliptin and metformin, and should not be administered to certain patients. For instance, it should not be used in patients with allergies to its components or those with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment, liver dysfunction, acute alcohol intoxication, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Due to the risk of hypoglycemia, blood glucose levels should be carefully monitored when taken along with insulin or sulfonylurea, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Metformin is excreted through the kidneys, so it should not be used in patients with renal impairment and renal function should be monitored regularly. Caution should be exercised in patients with poor cardiac function, acute illness, severe infection, dehydration, etc. When undergoing radiological examinations using iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after the examination, and re-evaluation of renal function should be conducted before resuming. During use, acute pancreatitis or skin blistering conditions may occur, so if symptoms arise, the physician should be notified immediately. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so it is important to monitor for vitamin B12 deficiency during long-term use. It is recommended not to use this medication in women who are pregnant or planning for pregnancy as well as in children under 10 years of age. Elderly patients may have impaired renal function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are necessary. In case of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis. If suspected, immediate hospital treatment is required, and blood dialysis may be beneficial. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, protected from moisture, and not transferred to other containers.
