Efficacy & effects

Improvement in type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)

  • Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone but is often combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin if the blood sugar improvement effect is inadequate with other hypoglycemic agents. Patients with type 2 diabetes should also undergo nutritional counseling and, if necessary, weight loss, while maintaining a regular exercise regimen. Such lifestyle changes can significantly enhance the initial treatment and sustain the effects of drug therapy. Therefore, this medication is effectively used to improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and acts to lower blood sugar levels in conjunction with insulin. This medication may put a strain on the heart, so it should not be used in patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. After starting treatment or increasing the dosage, it is crucial to monitor closely for symptoms of heart failure, such as rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, or swelling. If any of these symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately for appropriate treatment, as dosage adjustments or discontinuation of this medication may be necessary. This medication can cause fluid retention, worsening edema or heart failure, so it should be used cautiously in patients with edema or cardiovascular disease. Additionally, if symptoms associated with bladder cancer, such as hematuria or urination disorders, occur, inform a doctor immediately, and this medication should not be used in patients with a history of bladder cancer or active bladder cancer. Patients with impaired liver function also need to be cautious when using this medication, and the decision to use it should depend on liver function test results. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used in combination with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, so patients should be adequately educated about hypoglycemia symptoms and their management. For premenopausal women, this medication may induce ovulation, increasing the risk of pregnancy, so appropriate contraceptive methods should be employed. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function should also exercise caution when using this medication, and regular monitoring of blood sugar and liver function is recommended. During treatment with this medication, if sudden weight gain, edema, or shortness of breath occurs, consult healthcare personnel immediately. Drug interactions may occur, so if other medications are being taken, inform a physician or pharmacist, especially when used with specific enzymes that inhibit or induce liver function, as dosage adjustments may be necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should consult a doctor before using this medication, as data on safety are limited. In the case of overdose, specific symptoms may not manifest, but appropriate treatment should be administered based on clinical symptoms. This medication is not used in children as safety and efficacy have not been established.
