Improvement in Type 2 Diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medicine is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It is administered as an adjunct to diet and exercise, and can also be used alone. If blood sugar improvement is not achieved with other oral hypoglycemic agents, it can be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. Additionally, patients with Type 2 diabetes should also receive nutritional counseling and, if necessary, weight loss and exercise therapy. These treatment efforts are vital not only for initial treatment but also to maintain the effectiveness of drug therapy. Therefore, this medicine is actively used to improve blood sugar control.
This medicine is taken orally once a day regardless of meals. 1. Monotherapy This medicine may be started at 15 mg once a day for patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled with diet and exercise. If sufficient efficacy is not achieved, the dose may be increased to 30 mg once a day. 2. Combination Therapy - When used with sulfonylurea agents, the initial dose is 15 mg once a day.
Use in children under 18 years is not recommended due to lack of experience.
This medicine may cause or worsen congestive heart failure in some patients; therefore, symptoms of heart failure such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, and edema should be carefully monitored after starting treatment or increasing the dose. It is advisable not to use this medicine in patients with heart failure, and if heart failure symptoms develop, should be managed according to standard treatment practices, and if needed, the administration of this medicine should be stopped or the dose reduced. When used in conjunction with other diabetes medications like insulin, fluid retention may exacerbate heart failure, so regular checks for heart failure symptoms are necessary. Additionally, this medicine carries a higher risk of heart failure in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease and should be used cautiously in elderly patients over 75 years of age. If symptoms such as hematuria, urinary disturbances, or urgency occur during treatment, it may suggest a possibility of bladder cancer, and the physician should be notified immediately. This medicine should not be administered to those with hypersensitivity, heart failure, current or past bladder cancer, liver impairment, severe renal impairment, diabetic ketoacidosis, Type 1 diabetes, or pregnant women. Caution is required for patients taking other oral hypoglycemics, premenopausal women, patients with edema, those with heart disease or renal impairment, those with poor nutritional status or excessive alcohol consumption, and elderly patients. Common side effects may include edema, weight gain, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, myalgia, pharyngitis, abdominal bloating, hypoglycemia, urinary tract infection, back pain, dizziness, diarrhea, elevated serum creatine kinase, hypertension, chest pain, fatigue, dyspepsia, nausea, itching, chest discomfort, tremors, chills, gastrointestinal disease, epigastric discomfort, numbness, rigidity, headache discomfort, increased liver enzymes, worsening liver disease, dermatitis, arthralgia, knee abnormalities, weakness in arms.
